Surrounded by the breathtaking Talkeetna and Chugach Mountains, Big Lake is a growing residential community that offers outdoor recreation all year round. The 138-square mile Big Lake is also the namesake of the large, natural lake in the heart of the community. It is also known for being one of the largest bodies of water in South-Central Alaska.
The Athabascan Dena’ina Indians were the original settlers of the Big Lake community. When homesteaders started arriving in the 1920s, the area began to thrive and develop. Soon, numerous lodges, cottages, and recreational cabins were put up and Big Lake became the popular residential community and vacation destination that it is today.
The Big Lake community can be accessed via Parks Highway. It is also close to the cities of Houston, Wasilla, and Palmer. Anchorage is also just a 30-minute flight away. The Big Lake Airport, which is less than a mile from the Big Lake South State Recreation Site, is used primarily for general aviation.
